Ephesian Artemis

The specifically Ephesian version of the goddess Artemis was worshiped from Syria to Spain at well over 30 sites known to us. Metalworkers sometimes made souvenir shrines, miniature replicas of temples. Silver was among the most expensive substances used for such souvenirs.

Artemis's temple, meanwhile, was famous throughout the Mediterranean world. Though smaller than Jerusalem's Temple for the one God, Artemis's temple was one of the largest in antiquity, about four times the size of Athens' Parthenon. It was regularly counted among the seven wonders of the ancient world, and its treasury (which doubled as a bank) attracted international depositors. A scandal in A.D. 44, about a decade before this incident, involved misappropriation of funds at the treasury, making the mixture of religion and economics a volatile combination in Ephesus in precisely this period.
